Dehe Zhang, born in 1955, from Xiangshan, Zhejiang Province, is a Master of Chinese Bamboo Arts, Master of Chinese Root Art and Master of Arts and Crafts in Zhejiang Province. He is the Director of Zhejiang Bamboo Root Carving Expert Committee, the first representative inheritors of Zhejiang Intangible Cultural Heritage, and Chinese top ten folk artists.
From a craftsman to an artist, Dehe Zhang was inspired by the Chinese traditional philosophy of the unity of nature and man and the different modern aesthetic ideas, and introduced the local carving method, which more preserved the natural characteristics of bamboo root carving to reflect the the interest and taste of returning to original nature. Then, he also invented the method of Random Knife Carving, Skin Carving, Combination Carving, and Vigorous and Bold Freehand Method. His artistic innovation, opened up a new world of bamboo root carving art, known as "a revolution in Chinese bamboo root carving art ".
Dehe Zhang takes his own root art career as a "translation ". His job is to discover beauty, excavate beauty, shape beauty based on respect for nature's original work, acting as a nature's " translator ". He usually likes to write poems to express his mind and enlighten his thinking. Dehe Zhang put forward the idea of “To carve without carving, not to carve with carving” to the Root Art Creation.
“Fisherman having fun in Dongyin, Singing in azure water with seagulls, Misty rain being far away, a comfort life with light wind” , Dehe Zhang used his own poem to add a poetic meaning to his bamboo-root carving “Slanting Wind and Rain”. In his view, whether it is bamboo root or the tree root, it will produce special beauty only when its natural shape fits with the specific artistic image and creative thought. Most of his works have gone through the philosophical thinking of "carving and not carving ", and realized the process of skillful material, skillful thought and skillful carving.
Dehe Zhang has been obsessed with Root Carving for nearly 40 years with perseverance, and searching up and down. He not only brought the bamboo-root carving art of China in hopeless situation to a new peak, but also created of a large number of art rookie. Xiangshan Bamboo-Root Carving was developed from nothing, and was from coarse to fine, with fame spreading far and wide, until it was named as "the Hometown of Chinese Bamboo-Root Carving Art" by the Ministry of Culture.
